Being Ghanaian comes with great memories! From the post-colonial time to date, there remain specific moments in Ghana’s recent history that left Ghanaians in tears. Here are some of such sad events.
1. May 9th stadium disaster
The unfortunate May 9th disaster occurred at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra .It took the lives of 127 people, making it the worst stadium disaster to have ever taken place in Ghana and Africa.
2. Death of Atta Mills
The death of former president Mills remains one of the shocking events ever to have rocked Ghana. Prof. Mills’s death resulted in a national mourning with various heads of states from all political divides coming together to mourn the death of the late leader.
3. Black Stars World Cup semi-finals
It started as a successful match between Ghana and Uruguay. But things did not pan out so well when the famous Loius Suarez destroyed Ghana’s quarter final match during the 2010 World Cup. It was indeed a painful experience for Ghana!
4. June 3 disaster
Talk of one of the saddest disasters in Ghana and the twin distaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle comes to mind. Unfortunately, the disaster is feared to have caused the deaths of close to 200 victims who got burnt beyond recognition in the gas explosion at the Goil Filling Station. It was indeed a dark day for Ghana.
