Convicted murderer Darren Jackson, 51, of Burnley, Lancashire, escaped from HMP Sudbury yesterday morning.
He was sentenced at Manchester Crown Court in March 1986 to serve a life sentence for murder for stamping to death mother-of-three Gill Ellis after she was robbed at a Christmas party in Burnley, Lancashire.
He had been released but was later recalled to prison and was serving part of his sentence at HMP Sudbury.
The 51-year-old is described as being white, 6ft 4ins tall and slim. He has short cropped grey hair and a tribal tattoo on his wrist. His last known address is in Oldham.
In August 1997 Jackson escaped from the medium-security Ranby Prison, near Nottingham. He went on the run for three days before he made his way back to the area, giving himself up in Nelson.
Gill's brother, 51-year-old granfather of six Derek Peat said he was furious to learn Jackson was free from prison.
He said: 'What I can't understand is after the first time he escaped why they put them in a Category D prison which you can walk free from.
'At the end of the day they should be thinking about the public.
'It's a cock up in the government, they know he's escaped before why have they put him in an open prison?'
He had been released but was recalled - he was serving part of his sentence at HMP Sudbury
Self-employed decorator Mr Peat said that the horror of what happened to Gill lives with the family every day.
He said: 'It was devastating when it happened, and it still feels the same in my heart. He will never change his spots – he should be in prison
'You have to get through life. From day to day you've got to put it to the back of your mind, but when this happens it all comes flooding back.
'I'm just shocked at the way he's escaped from prison. He needs to be put there forever –he will never be rehabilitated.
'It could happen to somebody else. He's dangerous.'
Punk music lover Jackson, then 21, stamped to death the young mum with his size 11 Doc Martens at a park in December 1984 as she lay unconscious in a Burnley park.
He was jailed for life in 1986 after being found guilty of murder following a trial at Manchester Crown Court where prosecutor Benet Hytner said Gill's liver had 'virtually exploded'.
The court was told Jackson stamped on her with such ferocity that a main blood vessel to her heart was torn, her pancreas split and ribs fractured.
A Ministry of Justice Spokesperson said: 'Public protection is our top priority. When an abscond takes place, police are immediately notified and are responsible for locating the offender.
'Those who do abscond are returned to much tougher, closed prisons where they will have to serve additional time.'
Anyone with information as to his whereabouts should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
